Axe or Tomahawk throwing was associated with knife throwing and “Wild West” entertainers throughout the 20th Century, which inspired knife and axe hobby throwing throughout Europe and North America. Throughout the early 21st Century, hobby throwers began to form clubs, establish ranges, and organize competitions. Today, axe throwing is present from festivals and events to professional tournaments across every continent.
Ready to throw like a champ? Let’s break it down.
Step 1: Choose Your Axe
Starting from the beginning, a standard throwing axe is always the easiest option which weighs roughly around 1.5 pounds and around 12-17 inches long, as dull blades bounce so the sharper the better, but do not let that scare you, as it’ll stick to the boards easier with less force and more control.
Step 2: Prioritizing Safety
Safety is your number one priority when throwing axes. Take a moment to look around your environment. Make sure you have a minimum of a six-foot radius of clear space around your surroundings. Follow the rules at your venue. Wait until the target area is fully clear before throwing, and retrieve your axe only after everyone else has finished their throw. After all, nobody wants to get hurt at the end of the day.
Step 3: Find the Right Stance
Proper footing is extremely important to get a good throw. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart facing directly to the target. If you’re right-handed, place your right foot slightly behind your left for balance, and vice versa for left-handed. Control and balance is key, your body should be relaxed and stable to ensure a smooth axe throw.
Step 4: The Grip
Your grip is crucial, hold the axe firmly with both hands, your thumbs should be pointing straight up the handle, and keep a firm grip.
Step 5: The Throw
Here’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. Raise the axe straight over your head and your elbows should be bent slightly. Take a breath and bring your arms forward while keeping your eyes on the target, smoothly release the axe when it gets to eye level.
Throwing an axe can be tricky at first but it’s a combination of finding the exact precision, aim, rhythm as well as the “just right” energy. So just remember a strong stance is key, along with a firm grip and a smooth throw. With enough practice, you’ll be a confident axe thrower in no time!
